Hiking
The best way to experience Östergötland's varied landscape.

Covering more than 1500 kilometres, the Östgötaleden Trail offers over 100 different stages around Östergötland. There may be no better way to experience and see Östergötland than through its landscape – a little of everything and something for everyone. From deep forests to ‘schlätten’ (the plains). From wilderness to unique oak landscapes and Tåkern bird lake. From the shore of Lake Vättern to Östergötland Archipelago.
Hiking in Östergötland can take you on a journey of historical discovery via ancient castles in Omberg and St Birgitta’s home on the southern shore of Lake Boren to Adelsnäs Manor, Östergötland’s very own Downtown Abbey and Sweden’s only barony. Next, climb Via Ferrata-like trails in the Kolmården forest with wonderful views from the Spiran wind shelter towards the waters of Bråviken. Another, flatter trail stretches between Söderköping and Vadstena – the Pilgrimage Trail – which follows the route of the final journey to Sweden of the reliquary with St Birgitta’s ashes.
Spend the night in one of the many hostels along the hiking trails, or sleep in one of the wind shelters in nature, or alternatively one of Arknat’s newly built shelters in and around Omberg. If you prefer more luxurious accommodation, why not choose one of Östergötland’s hotels near nature with a hiking package.
